Ovarian Carcinoma and Serous Effusions. Changing Views Regarding Tumor Progression and Review of Current Literature
نویسنده
چکیده
Carcinoma of the ovary is the leading cause of death from gynecological cancer in western countries. Ovarian carcinoma is commonly associated with the accumulation of fluid containing malignant cells in the peritoneal, and not infrequently in the pleural cavity. The differentiation of these cells from reactive mesothelial cells is at times difficult. In addition, tumor progression in ovarian carcinoma and the biological characteristics of carcinoma cells in effusions compared to their counterparts in solid tumors are poorly understood. This review details the current knowledge regarding diagnostic and biologic aspects of effusion cytology, with emphasis on ovarian carcinoma. Results from our first studies of effusions are subsequently presented. These attempt to address several issues. First, to improve the diagnostic ability to detect cancer cells in effusions using antibodies designed for the differentiation of epithelial cells from mesothelial cells. Secondly, to study genotypic and phenotypic differences between ovarian carcinoma cells in effusions, solid primary tumors and metastatic lesions, as well as to compare malignant cells in peritoneal and pleural effusions. These studies of carbohydrate antigens, E-cadherin complex and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) attempted to evaluate whether ovarian carcinoma cells in effusions possess true metastatic properties, or are similar to the cells in primary tumors, thereby merely representing the result of a shedding process. Finally, the prognostic role of these molecules was studied in solid tumors from a patient cohort consisting of long- and short-term survivors, followed for up to 20 years. Ovarian Small Cell Carcinoma: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature
Ovarian small cell carcinoma is a rare and highly malignant tumor with poor prognosis. It usually presents in younger females with features of hypercalcemia. The exact histogenesis of the tumor is unclear and it may present as an undifferentiated tumor. In such cases, immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role to confirm the diagnosis. Limited treatment options are available and mainly ...
متن کاملHyaluronan Synthase and Hyaluronidase Expression in Serous Ovarian Carcinoma is Related to Anatomic Site and Chemotherapy Exposure
The present study investigated the expression and clinical role of hyaluronan synthases (HAS1-3) and hyaluronidases (Hyal1-3) in serous ovarian carcinoma. HAS and HYAL mRNA expression was analyzed in 97 tumors (61 effusions, 27 primary carcinomas, 9 solid metastases) using PCR and further studied for association with clinicopathologic parameters, including survival. HAS1 mRNA was overexpressed ...
متن کاملطبقهبندی مجدد کارسینوماهای سروز تخمدان با روش جدید تقسیمبندی دوگانه (two-tier) و بررسی بروز ژن P53 با رنگآمیزی ایمونوهیستوشیمی
Background: Recently the use of “two tier" grading system in which ovarian serous carcinoma was classified as low-grade or high-grade in comparing to preceding system has improved authority in prognosis and survival. This approach is simplistic, reproducible, and based on biologic evidence. In this study, we reclassified ovarian serous carcinoma by a new two-tier system for grading and then eva...
متن کاملPrognostic Values of Estrogen and Progesterone Expression Receptors in Ovarian Papillary Serous Carcinoma
Background and Objectives: Presence of steroid hormone receptors (estrogen and progesterone) in the tumor tissues of various organs correlates with response to therapy and prognosis. Since their role in ovarian cancer is still controversial, in this study we investigated the expression and prognostic value of the estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) in ovarian papillary ser...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical Characterization of Normal Ovary and Common Epithelial Ovarian Neoplasm with a Monoclonal Antibody to Cytokeratin and Vimentin
Background & Objective: The common epithelial ovarian tumors are classified into serous, mucinous, clear cell, endometrioid, the Brenner, mixed, and undifferentiated types. Cytoskeleton intermediate filament composition of ovarian tissues indicates that the cytokeratin and vimentin are observed in ovarian surface epithelium along with the common ovaria...
